The Boy in the World of Machines (book excerpt)
Jasper knew more about machines than any of his friends. Whenever one of his toys broke, he always tried to fix it himself, and more often than not, he succeeded.
One day, while Jasper was building a railway, his little toy locomotive gave a quiet creak and suddenly came to a stop. He tried to start it again, but no matter what he did, the engine wouldn't budge.
Just then, a tiny white cat stepped briskly out from behind the toy box. He was wearing a helmet with shiny goggles and carrying a miniature suitcase in his paws.
"Hello there! I'm Chief Engineer Meowx," the cat announced, straightening his whiskers. "Looks like you've got a mechanical problem. I believe I can fix it!"
"And I'm Jasper," the boy replied with a smile. "Can I help? I know a thing or two about machines myself!"
"I could certainly use a partner!" Meowx said delightedly
The cat opened his suitcase, pulled out a peculiar device that looked rather like an old-fashioned camera, and pointed it at Jasper.

In an instant, Jasper began to shrink! Smaller and smaller he became, until he was only a little taller than Meowx himself.
Now the toy locomotive looked absolutely enormous.
Meowx walked up to one of its giant wheels, pulled a cleverly hidden handle, and with a long, rusty creak, a small door swung open in the side of the engine.
They stepped inside, and Jasper gasped in amazement.
Huge, gleaming gears turned all around them. Copper pipes twisted and intertwined overhead, while glowing neon tubes illuminated the extraordinary mechanical world. An uneven humming echoed from the metal walls.
"Do you hear that?" Meowx asked, pricking up one ear. "The motor isn't running smoothly. That means the problem is somewhere deep inside. We'll have to make our way to the Main Engine Room!"
