The Girl and the Little Friendly Ghost (book excerpt)
Aveline loved autumn. She loved the rustling leaves beneath her feet, the crisp, cool air, and that special feeling that something magical was just about to happen in the forest.
She could wander along the woodland paths for hours, making up stories about everything she saw. An old tree stump might become a forest giant's table, while a narrow path could lead to a secret kingdom.
And sometimes, the forest seemed to play along with her imagination.
Aveline was gathering the prettiest leaves when something white suddenly flashed between the trees. It moved so quickly that she couldn't even tell what she had seen. Curiosity got the better of her, and Aveline hurried after it.
The little white shape disappeared behind an old birch tree. It slipped beneath a low branch, darted around a bush, and dove straight into a pile of dry leaves with a loud rustle.
Stepping closer, Aveline called out:
"Got you! I can see you!"
Suddenly, two round eyes peeked out from the pile. Then a little white head appeared. And finally, out climbed... a ghost!
A very small ghost. White, soft-looking, and a little bit fluffy and tousled.
The girl and the ghost stared at each other.
"Who are you?" they asked at the very same time, then burst into laughter.
And that was how Aveline met the little autumn ghost.
The ghost's name was Rustle.
"I have an awful lot of work to do today," Rustle announced importantly.
"What kind of work?" the girl asked in surprise.
Rustle led Aveline to an old maple tree at the edge of a clearing.
"Before the last leaf falls, the forest must be ready for winter," Rustle explained, counting off the tasks on his tiny, transparent fingers. "I need to check the squirrels' food supplies, help the birds get ready for their journey, find dry leaves for the hedgehogs' burrows..."
"And you do all that by yourself?" Aveline asked.
"Usually, yes. But autumn came early this year. I'm afraid I'm already running behind."
"Then you definitely need some help!"
"In that case, I hereby appoint you my assistant!" Rustle exclaimed happily.
"All right, I'll help you," Aveline agreed with a nod.
